Concern




The word concern can act as differentparts of speech and can have different meanings (e.g. to involve, to be about, to take an interest in, to worry), which do not correspond directly to Chinese. These are the patterns the word usually occurs in:


Pattern 1:

  • Something concerns someone NOTE


Pattern 2:

  • Someone is concerned ABOUT (or BY) something. NOTE


Pattern 3:

  • The concerned man tried to help the dying child. NOTE


Pattern 4:

  • The man concerned tried to help the dying child. NOTE


Pattern 5:

  • Something is a matter of great concern. NOTE


Pattern 6:

  • I will now explain my position concerning this matter. NOTE


Be careful that your meaning is clear when you use this word. Which of the following sentences is ambiguous (it can mean more than one thing)?


  • The problem concerned many people.

  • Many people were concerned about the problem.
