Allowable Sentence Patterns



When producing English, ONLY speak in sentences and ONLY write in sentences.


For our purposes, this is the definition of a sentence that we will use.

  1. A sentence is a statement. (TO GIVE INFORMATION)

  2. subject + verb + blah blah blah + time.

  3. time + subject + verb + blah blah blah.

  4. subject + verb + blah blah blah.

  5. NOTE: The verb can be affirmative or negative. The verb can be in any of the 5 essential verb tenses only.


  1. Or a sentence is a yes/no question. (TO GET INFORMATION)

  2. If the main verb is a form of “to be”

  3. Is/Am/Are + subject + + subject + being + adjective/noun/preposition of time or place ?

  4. Was/Were + subject + adjective/noun/preposition of time or place ?

  5. Will ++ subject + be + adjective/noun/preposition of time or place ?

  6. Is/Am/Are + subject + being + adjective/noun/preposition of time or place ?

  7. Have/Has + subject + been +adjective/noun/preposition of time or place + time (optional)?


  1. If the main verb is NOT a form of “to be”

  2. Do/Does + subject + verb + blah blah blah + time (optional)?

  3. Did + subject + verb + blah blah blah + time (optional)?

  4. Will ++ subject + verb + blah blah blah + time (optional)?

  5. Is/Am/Are + subject + verbing + blah blah blah + time (optional)?

  6. Have/Has + subject + past participle + blah blah blah + time (optional)?


  1. Or a sentence is an information question. (TO GET INFORMATION)

  2. If the main verb is a form of “to be”

  3. W/H + is/Am/Are + subject adjective/noun/preposition of time or place ?

  4. W/H + was/were + subject + adjective/noun/preposition of time or place ?

  5. W/H + will ++ subject + be + adjective/noun/preposition of time or place ?

  6. W/H + is/am/are + subject + being + adjective/noun/preposition of time or place?

  7. W/H + have/has + subject + been + adjective/noun/preposition of time or place ?

  8. blah blah blah + time (optional)?


  1. If the main verb is NOT a form of “to be”

  2. Do/Does + subject + verb + blah blah blah + time (optional)?

  3. Did + subject + verb + blah blah blah + time (optional)?

  4. Will ++ subject + verb + blah blah blah + time (optional)?

  5. Is/Am/Are + subject + VREBing + blah blah blah (optional) + time (optional)?

  6. Have/Has + subject + past participle + blah blah blah (optional) + time (optional)?


  1. Or a sentence is a request. (PEDIR ALGUIEN HACER ALGO)

  2. Please + VERB + blah blah blah (optional) + time (optional).

  3. Please update your resume.

  4. Please + don’t VERB + blah blah blah + time (optional).

  5. Please don’t worry. (optional)

NOTE:

  1. In English this is appropriate: “Please finish updating the data.”.(It is polite. It is clear. It is uncomplicated, so there is less room for error, It is not rude.) However if you cannot adapt to using “please + verb + blah blah blah” or “please + don’t + verb+ blah blah blah”, then use one of these:. These are also considered polite.

  2. I wonder if you could finish updating the data please?

  3. Would you mind updating the data?

  4. Could you finish updating the data?


  1. Or a sentence is a thank you.

  2. Thank you for SOMETHING. + blah blah blah (optional) + time (optional)

  3. Thank you for your approval.

  4. Thank you for VERBing + blah blah blah (optional) + time (optional)

  5. Thank you for explaining the problem to me.
